Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Type-0

Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Type-0 have been announced for quite a while now, and Final Fantasy Type-0 has been released for well over a year now in Japan. In this article, I hope to give some predictions I have regarding these games, and I hope to get all your inputs in the comments section.

First off, will Final Fantasy Versus XIII get a name change? Some rumors have been floating around that this will happen. Some believe that it will be changed to Final Fantasy XV. Others believe that it will be changed into something else entirely. While others think that the name will remain as it is. My opinion? I believe that the name will remain the same. I believe this because Final Fantasy Versus XIII has been floating around the internet and media for almost seven years now, and I know for a fact that there are people not interested in the Final Fantasy series, and yet are interested in Final Fantasy Versus XIII. At the same time, I know that some of those people don’t follow video game news as much as some of us do, thus if the game does get a name change there will most likely be a loss of potential customers. Basically, the name’s been around too long for it to change now, as opposed to Final Fantasy Type-0 which was changed early in comparison.

However, there is no denying the possibility that the name might change. If so, to  what? Final Fantasy Versus XIII’s name, if changed, will most likely be changed to something entirely different as opposed to Final Fantasy XV (a la Agito XIII to Type-0). This is because (disregarding a few quotes here and there) I do not believe that Square Enix will release a main numbered Final Fantasy Title with a Kingdom Hearts like battle system, as well as having Third person shooter elements, among other things. All Final Fantasies to this point have had their differences, but have remained turn based at their core. While there is the possibility that this trend will change, I’ll believe it when I see it.

Finally, which system will Final Fantasy Versus XIII be released on? Given what we learned in the PlayStation conference, it seems safe to say that it will most likely be released on both the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation 4. Several indicators point to this. First of all, if this was planned, it would explain the severe lack of news. Second of all, there are several games that are already revealed to be released on both the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation 4, so it won’t be something unheard of. Another point is that Final Fantasy Versus XIII uses a current generation engine that will use lighting elements from the Luminous engine (a next generation engine). I do not know much about the exact procedures in developing a game, however it makes sense to me that a game that uses aspects from both generations would be very suitable to release on both generations.

Final Fantasy Type-0 (Tonberry)

Moving on to Final Fantasy Type-0, pretty much all questions have been answered regarding this game apart from which system it will be released on in the West, and in what format. One popular theory regarding this game’s stay in Japan is that Square Enix are worried that the PlayStation Portable market is too small/too rampant with piracy for them to make a suitable profit. When asked why they do not remaster it and release it on the PlayStation Vita, they are confronted with the same theory, saying that that market is too small as well. My idea? Why not release it as a PlayStation Network release and make it available for both the PlayStation Portable and the PlayStation Vita? That way, they would be, in essence, combining both markets. Given the extremely high popularity of this game and its excellent reviews in Japan, I am very firm in my belief that this would make them decent, if not excellent, profit. Furthermore, they would reduce costs since they do not have to pay for production of two times the UMD’s necessary for the market (since the game has two UMD’s)

Anyway, that’s my two cents. Any input would be appreciated!

Swaz, you’re missing the point that the Versus Engine is PS3 specific. The last time they opted for the PS3 was a year ago. They would have to create a engine compatible with the PS4 within that year but it can’t be possible due to the fact that SE is “using all their resources” to finish the remake of FFXIV(& possibly Lightning Returns).

If they were to move to the PS4, it would mean more development delay then it already is.

IMO, Versus XIII will stay on the Playstation 3, just as Nomura intended.

There’s no such thing as a “versus engine”. It uses crystal tools with the Luminous engine lighting. If the game is moved to PS4, they would obviously be using the Luminous engine since that will be their engine for next gen. A lot of games go through development hell and are scrapped and re done plenty of times. Square Enix can easily re do what they’ve done so far with the Luminous engine since it is made to make development easier and faster. Anything can happen in a year, and the switch to PS4 can definitely happen in a year even if it is not a launch window title.

Oh, you really mean that? How about telling me what you said again after reading this article…. http://andriasang.com/comy9x/

The main engine Versus XIII is using is it’s Game Specific Engine opted for the PS3. Crystal Tools is being used for Character creation, and Luminous Engine only for Lighting and nothing else. Most of the main code and framework including libraries, specific functions, etc. are done by the Versus XIII engine.

No, even if 100 Software Engineers were working on an engine opted for the PS4, they will not be able to finish it within a year of development + added onto making code off of said PS4 engine specified for the functionality of creating Versus XIII. Not only that, but SE has been using up most of their resources for the “conclusion” of FFXIV and Lightning Returns during the past year as mentioned here:

Do you even understand what you are saying??? Do you even understand the works of Game Development? Do you know how long it will take to work on a project as big as when being switched to a different environment?? This means recoding Versus with different programming methods suited for the Luminous engine instead of what they originally had with the Versus XIII engine, redoing the architecture of their code in Versus XIII, and worst of all attempting to recreate the functions that the Versus XIII engine once had within Luminous Engine.

As Nomura said, The Versus XIII engine is specific in areas suited for the game, it is not a general purpose engine like the Luminous Engine

    • I’m just saying its a possibility and that it would be a good explanation for lack of news. I would like it to stay on the PS3, but only time will tell.

Up to today, I don’t think Nomura has ever gone back on his word during his previous experiences when directing & developing games, so I trust him on developing this specifically for the PS3. On development’s point of view, I find it illogical for it to move to PS4. Unless SE wants to delay development of Versus further than it already is at this point just to benefit from business but that itself wouldn’t prove much benefit.

But thats the point of “versus” in the title.
You didn’t think this through did you?
The game is meant to be a completely different FF.
